Position Summary The Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and preventative maintenance of heavy-duty diesel trucks, trailers, construction equipment, and other diesel-powered vehicles and machinery. This role ensures all equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with manufacturer specifications and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities - Perform complete diagnostic testing on diesel engines, transmissions, drivetrains, hydraulic systems, air brakes, steering, suspension, electrical, and HVAC systems using computer diagnostic tools and traditional methods.
- Conduct preventative maintenance services including oil changes, filter replacements, tire services, brake inspections, and fluid services.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computerized system failures on heavy-duty trucks, and off-road equipment.
- Disassemble, overhaul, and reassemble diesel engines, transmissions, and major components as needed.
- Perform welding, fabrication, and custom repairs when required.
- Test drive or operate vehicles and equipment to verify repairs and ensure proper performance.
- Maintain accurate records of all services, repairs, parts used, and time spent using repair order systems.
- Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, shop procedures, and environmental regulations (including proper handling of hazardous materials).
- Provide emergency field service and roadside repairs as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements - High school diploma or GED required; technical school or apprenticeship in diesel technology preferred.
- Minimum 3-5 years of verifiable experience as a heavy-duty diesel mechanic (truck, trailer, or heavy equipment).
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, air brakes, hydraulics, and electronic control systems.
- Valid driver's license required
- Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematics.
- Must own or be willing to acquire a basic set of hand and power tools.
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. occasionally and work in various weather conditions.
Skills & Competencies - Excellent mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Proficiency with diagnostic software and scan tools.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication and customer service skills.
- Reliable, safety-conscious, and able to work flexible hours including occasional overtime or weekends.
