Position Summary

The Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and preventative maintenance of heavy-duty diesel trucks, trailers, construction equipment, and other diesel-powered vehicles and machinery. This role ensures all equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with manufacturer specifications and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform complete diagnostic testing on diesel engines, transmissions, drivetrains, hydraulic systems, air brakes, steering, suspension, electrical, and HVAC systems using computer diagnostic tools and traditional methods.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance services including oil changes, filter replacements, tire services, brake inspections, and fluid services.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computerized system failures on heavy-duty trucks, and off-road equipment.
  • Disassemble, overhaul, and reassemble diesel engines, transmissions, and major components as needed.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and custom repairs when required.
  • Test drive or operate vehicles and equipment to verify repairs and ensure proper performance.
  • Maintain accurate records of all services, repairs, parts used, and time spent using repair order systems.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, shop procedures, and environmental regulations (including proper handling of hazardous materials).
  • Provide emergency field service and roadside repairs as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical school or apprenticeship in diesel technology preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of verifiable experience as a heavy-duty diesel mechanic (truck, trailer, or heavy equipment).
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, air brakes, hydraulics, and electronic control systems.
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematics.
  • Must own or be willing to acquire a basic set of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. occasionally and work in various weather conditions.

  • Excellent mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic software and scan tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.
  • Reliable, safety-conscious, and able to work flexible hours including occasional overtime or weekends.
