Bard College is seeking a full-time Academic Advisor . The Academic Advisor is a member of the Office of Equity & Inclusion staff and is responsible for directly supporting the undergraduate and graduate students who receive scholarships under the Center for Indigenous Studies (CfIS) and opportunity programs supporting Indigenous students. With a mission to nurture public programming focused on education, arts, and advocacy in Native American and Indigenous Studies, CfIS offers scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students from any of the 574 federally recognized tribes. CfIS scholars study across Bard programs with a broad range of interests. CfIS will work closely with Academic Advisor to fully support Indigenous Students.

Bard College is also a founding member of the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). HEOP is central to the college's ongoing commitment to ensuring that a Bard education remains accessible, regardless of socioeconomic status. Over the last ten years, the program has grown to support the development and academic success of students coming to Bard on a variety of opportunity-related scholarships such as the Early College Opportunity Scholarship and the Posse Scholarship from the Atlanta & Puerto Rico programs. The scholars include low-income, Pell-eligible, and first-generation college students from diverse backgrounds.

The successful candidate in this position will be someone who is student-oriented and experienced in working directly with Indigenous students at undergraduate and graduate levels and will offer personal, academic, and career advising in one-on-one setting, as well as in small groups. This position reports to the Director of the Educational Opportunity Programs and coordinates with the Center for Indigenous Studies staff, and is a full-time, salaried position within Student/Academic Affairs.

Close collaboration is expected with other staff and offices and programs across the College; including, but not limited to, the Center for Indigenous Studies, Admissions, the Learning Commons, the Dean of Student Affairs Office, Student Activities, Health and Counseling Services, the Office of Residence Life and Housing, Athletics, and appropriate/relevant graduate programs. In addition, outreach to faculty is also expected as an important means of effective intervention to help ensure the academic success of advisees.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide holistic advising (academic, personal and social support) in an educational setting to individuals and groups of scholars and community members
  • Assist students with exploring options, setting goals, and creating a plan to achieve desired outcomes Monitor academic progress of students and assist with their post-graduation transition to work or graduate school
  • Assist with planning and implementing programming events and workshops for the collaboration with Financial Aid office
  • Monitor students' success through ongoing outreach and advising; make appropriate referrals and interventions
  • Maintain confidential records and provide student information on each assigned student for the required database. (Provide information for college, state, and federal reports)
  • Admissions and recruitment
  • Supervise student advisee groups
  • Assume related administrative duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Experience working with college and graduate students, staff and faculty of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and/or learning abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of outreach and retention strategies that meet the needs of college and graduate students from low-income and/or first-generation backgrounds
  • Confidence and proficiency with computers
  • Driver's license required
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to collaborate with students, staff, and faculty with both written and verbal skills
  • Fluency in another language, particularly in Spanish, is a plus

Compensation: $58,500 - $60,000 annually

This salary range reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations, experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.
